Natural gas fuel (CNG)***

Natural gas is found in underground reserves in various countries such as Norway and Russia. It is extracted from underground by drilling and then transported to Switzerland in pipelines. Burning natural gas produces lessCO2 than heating oil and is therefore more environmentally friendly.

Awards

The price of natural gas fuel at the Energy Service filling station located at the BP petrol station on the road from Lausanne to Yverdon-les-Bains is CHF 1.02 litre-petrol equivalent, which corresponds to CHF 1.50 per kilogram of natural gas.

Fuel of the future

Natural gas is a sensible and environmentally friendly alternative to other fuels.

Today, when mobility is important, traffic emissions (especially in urban agglomerations) are reaching a level of pollution that should no longer be tolerated today. At present, only natural gas seems to offer a real and economical solution.

Due to its special properties, natural gas has proven to have a high ecological potential and can make a direct contribution, particularly in the field of transport, to reducing pollution from soot, nitric oxide,CO2 and hydrocarbons. Gas-powered vehicles emit 60-95% fewer pollutants into the atmosphere than petrol or diesel-powered vehicles. However, it is still too early to be happy, as it will only be possible to achieve the Swiss climate policy targets for 2010 when 300,000 petrol and diesel vehicles are replaced by natural gas vehicles.

The advantages of natural gas fuel

... environmentally friendly

Per kilometre travelled, natural gas produces fewer pollutant emissions than petrol and diesel:

  • Up to 25% less Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
  • Up to 85% less nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  • Up to 55% less carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Up to 75% less non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC)

* Biogas even has a neutralCO2 balance.

...saves money...

Reduced fuel costs:

  • 35% lower than gasoline
  • 30% lower than diesel

There are incentives when buying a new vehicle. Moreover, from 1 July 2008, CNG will be partially zero-rated, which will promote its competitiveness.

...clean and safe

  • No losses during refuelling (no emissions harmful to health)
  • No additives or carcinogenic substances
  • Quieter
  • Level of safety equal to that of petrol or diesel-powered vehicles

Driving on natural gas - Safety guaranteed

Perfectly developed techniques

The natural gas tank in these vehicles is absolutely reliable. Crash tests have shown that natural gas tanks are just as - if not safer - than petrol tanks. In the event of a broken pipe or fire, for example, safety devices are available to stop gas leaks or to stop any overpressure in the tank. Thanks to these perfectly developed techniques, a bursting of the pressure tank is absolutely excluded.

Filling up with natural gas...

In Switzerland... (to view the filling stations, click on this link)

Natural gas fuel will be made available to all. To this end, Switzerland is setting up a network of filling stations. Gazmobile SA is collaborating with partner companies in the evaluation, design and construction of these stations.

In Switzerland, there are already 140 public stations and the number of stations will increase further.
