Smart meter
Why replace the current meters? What is a smart meter?
In May 2017, the Swiss people said yes to the Energy Strategy 2050; 73% of the people of Vaud accepted it.As a result of this vote, the city is obliged to replace 80% of its current meters with smart meters by 2027, which represents 18,000 meters to be replaced. These new meters, also known as smart meters, measure consumption data and will allow everyone to better control their electricity, water and/or gas consumption.
Can I benefit from a smart meter?
The smart meters will be phased in between now and 2027, with priority given to the largest consumers and building communities in the first instance. According to our planning, the roll-out of smart meters to residential customers will start from 2022/2023, building by building, until 2027.
How will the installation work?
Yverdon Energies is responsible for equipping the town with new so-called smart meters. We will proceed with the deployment in batches, as we did with the fibre optics. This approach will not incur any costs for the end consumer.
The process will take place in 3 stages:
Yverdon Energies makes an initial contact, by mail or telephone, with the customers concerned by the deployment, according to the order of priority.
Yverdon Energies technicians visit the technical premises and replace the current meters with smart meters.
On their personalised Customer Area, customers have access to their detailed water, electricity and/or gas consumption data.
What are my benefits?
- You can regularly monitor your water, electricity and/or gas consumption via access to your Customer area personalized account. You can thus directly adapt your behaviour and make savings.
- Your accounts are read in real time, no need to have a meter reader on your premises or to send us your annual indexes.
- No more unpleasant surprises at the time of the annual statement thanks to quarterly billing based on actual consumption.
How often will I be invoiced?
The new default billing frequency will be quarterly, but other possibilities will be offered: for example, the customer will be able to benefit from free monthly billing in the case of e-bills or invoices sent by e-mail.
Would you like to know more?
A smart meter transmits the various consumption data for electricity, water and/or gas every 15 minutes. This process makes it possible to establish a consumption curve (see illustration below). If you are equipped with a smart meter, this consumption curve is available on your personalised customer area at my.yverdon-energies.ch.
Yverdon Energies is in the process of replacing its meters in order to meet the federal requirements for smart metering set out in the Electricity Supply Ordinance (OApEl). The Ordinance stipulates that 80% of
electricity network customers must be equipped with smart meters by the end of 2027.
The new meter installed is a "smart" meter.
The implementation of smart meters will be beneficial to the inhabitants of the municipality who will have access to their consumption curve (see illustration above) and will thus be able to better understand their consumption patterns. By being better informed, they will be able to take action to reduce their energy consumption. By logging on to your personalised Customer Area, you will be able to access your bills, energy consumption data and many other features at any time. The smart meters will also eventually become a real management and control tool for all the energy networks in your city.
No. Smart meters meet very strict standards and are not harmful to health. The waves generated by the meters are no more powerful than those from a baby phone.

Until now and in most cases, billing was based on an instalment model where the customer receives bills every two months based on estimated consumption. At the end of the year, as the customer's actual consumption was known, the billing was adjusted by means of a final statement for the past year. With smart metering, the energy or water bill will be based on what has actually been consumed between readings. The reading rate can be adjusted to suit the customer's needs. The new default billing frequency will be quarterly, but other possibilities will be offered: for example, the customer will be able to benefit from free monthly billing in the case of e-bills or bills sent by e-mail.
With e-bill, your bills are sent directly to your e-banking/e-finance account. To switch to e-bill, log in to your bank's e-banking system or contact us on +41 24 423 65 21 or +41 24 423 65 22 or sey-abo@yverdon-les-bains.ch
Replacing your current meter with a smart meter is free of charge as it is a legal requirement.
The time required to change a meter is approximately 30 minutes with a 20-minute power, gas and/or water cut.
A Yverdon Energies technician with a legitimation card will come and install your new energy meters.
As long as your meter is accessible, your presence is not mandatory. However, if you wish to be present, an appointment will be made in advance by our teams, particularly in the case of individual houses.
Yverdon Energies guarantees the protection of your consumption data. They will be recorded anonymously in accordance with the framework defined in the Ordinance on Electricity Supply (art. 8d OApEI). All your personal data will be stored exclusively in our billing system in accordance with article 8d OApEl, the Federal Law on Data Protection (LPD) and its federal ordinance, as well as the recommendations of the industry.
The smart meters will be deployed with PLC technology, i.e. direct transmission of consumption data via the low-voltage electricity network to the district station or a hub connected to the servers via optical fibre (and not in the air). These types of transmission greatly limit the wave emissions from the meters.
The data measured by the meter is available in theCustomer Area 24 hours after transmission
