FAQ natural gas

What is biogas?

Biogas is obtained by the biological degradation of organic matter (compost waste, manure, etc.) in the absence of oxygen. It contains a high proportion of methane, which offers a high calorific and energy potential. It is a 100% renewable source of energy that allows an advantageous substitution of fossil fuels.

What is CO2 offsetting?

CO2 offsetting refers to the financial support of projects that reduceCO2 emissions either by replacing combustion with another process based on renewable energies or by optimising combustion through the use of modern technology. For example, in certain isolated regions not connected to an electricity grid, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels has made it possible to eliminate the production of electricity from polluting diesel engines. Yverdon-les-Bains Energies compensates for theCO2 emissions resulting from the combustion of the natural gas consumed by financially supporting projects of this type.

What are theCO2 offsetting projects supported by Yverdon-les-Bains Énergies?

In partnership with the Swiss foundation myclimate, Yverdon-les-Bains Energies supports twoCO2 offset projects:

« Les groupes de microcrédit permettent aux femmes d’acquérir des fours efficaces »

Traditionally, in rural communities in the Siaya region of western Kenya, cooking is done on open fireplaces, which consume a lot of wood. Now, thanks to communal savings and micro-credit groups, women can buy more efficient stoves, which reduces the demand for cooking wood and thus protects the surrounding forests and reduces the emissions of CO₂. In addition, microcredit groups strengthen women's financial and social independence.

« De l’électricité issue des déchets de bois FSC en Amazonie »

This small-scale project is the first in the world to produce emissions certificates based on sustainably harvested biomass from an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forest economy. The wood chip power plant with an electrical output of 9 MW is located in the sawmill of the company Precious Woods in Itacoatiara, a small town in the Brazilian Amazon.

The project is replacing several diesel generators and helping to provide the city's approximately 80,000 residents with more climate-friendly electricity. Thanks to the power plant, the local population benefits from lower energy prices and a more stable energy supply (fewer failures and transport losses). The plant produces up to 45,000 MWh of electricity each year, for which some 10 to 15 million litres of diesel would otherwise be consumed. The resulting waste heat is used for the wood drying plants.

What is the ecological impact if I change my product?

By choosing the product gmixor geco, I contribute to the development of renewable energies in Yverdon-les-Bains and support the Commune in its sustainability objectives while reducing my ecological footprint through ecological compensation.

How is the ecological added value of the gmix option calculated?

The calculation takes into account the production costs of the Swiss biogas and its share in the product gmix.

How would a product change affect my annual natural gas bill?

The annual cost difference depends on my actual consumption. I can refer to my last year's bill to get an idea of how many kWh I consume per year.

Examples of costs and tariff differences according to the product chosen in simple tariff (amounts including VAT but excluding the power cost of the installation and the fixed subscription amount):

Example of annual consumption Type of consumer gecoannual reference price Annual difference when choosing the product gmix
50 m3 / 514 kWh family cook CHF 72.- + CHF 7.00
130 m3 / 1337 kWh  water heater only CHF 93.- + CHF 18.00
700 m3 / 7200 kWh  apartment heater CHF 500.- + CHF 97.00
2500 m3 / 25717 kWh  villa boiler CHF 1785.- + CHF 347.00
8000 m3 / 82296 kWh  small building boiler CHF 5284.- + CHF 1111.00

Can I choose several products for my natural gas supply?

No, a meter or measuring point can only be linked with one product at a time.

What is the guarantee of supply of the options purchased?

The validation and verification of theCO2 compensation certificates for our natural gas offer are carried out by the independent institution Gold Standard, which guarantees the highest possible international sustainability quality forCO2 reduction certificates (principle of greenhouse gas neutrality). The biogas is of Swiss origin.

In the event of demand for natural gas products that exceeds the availability on the market, Yverdon-les-Bains Énergies will endeavour to replace the missing energy with equivalent or lower quality energy. The selling price will be adjusted accordingly.

How are the different energies channeled to my home?

Since our network is supplied by several sources, all the energy is found in the same pipes. The laws of physics do not allow us to sort the electrons or molecules of the energies to deliver them to each customer according to their choice. As a result, Yverdon-les-Bains Energies is committed to supplying itself in accordance with customer demand and in line with their choice of energy.

In order to ensure conformity of supply and sale according to the choices of our customers, we publish the energy marking once a year. This document certifies that the supply is in conformity with the subscription of the products by our customers. That is, that the equivalent of each customer's consumption is injected into the network according to their energy choice.

When and at what cost can I change products?

A product change during a calendar year is possible with 15 days notice for the end of a quarter. An amount of CHF 50 (excl. VAT) will be charged to cover administrative and meter reading costs. The change is not charged if the change is made 15 days before the end of a year. For more information, please refer to the general terms and conditions and the special terms and conditions concerning ecological options.

Can I change my product over the phone?

A request by telephone is not sufficient, a written request via a reply coupon or subscription form is mandatory. It is also possible to subscribe via our online form.

Will my deposit increase depending on the product I choose?

Yes for all customers who receive an annual invoice the deposit will take into account the choice of product.
