Yverdon-les-Bains and Swisscom want to jointly roll out the communal fibre-optic network to subscribers' homes and business premises (FTTH). The partners have agreed on this project in a declaration of intent. Deployment is planned over the next five years. The project will soon be submitted to the Municipal Council.
The City of Yverdon-les-Bains and Swisscom have signed a declaration of intent to connect all of the city's homes and businesses to the fibre-optic network by 2019, i.e. almost 15,000 households and 3,000 buildings. The aim is to bring optical fibre to the end user (Fibre To The Home - FTTH), so that the people of Yverdon, whether private or professional, can benefit from a high quality high-speed Internet network, which is the basis for the development of the economic fabric. The project will shortly be presented to the Local Council for acceptance, in the form of a notice period.
The planned partnership and joint investments will make it possible to optimise construction costs and avoid building a duplicate network, while ensuring competition between providers. The cooperation agreement provides for homes and businesses to be connected with four optical fibres in accordance with the recommendations of the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom). Customers will thus be able to choose between the attractive offers of various telecommunications operators, who will have access to the new network via the four available fibres. The fibre-optic connection will also enable the Yverdon-les-Bains Energy Service to integrate all buildings into an intelligent electricity network (Smartgrid).
Yverdon-les-Bains started its first fibre optic equipment in 1974 by connecting its technical installations and then its administrative buildings. Swisscom, for its part, has been developing a fibre-optic network in the spa town since 2013.
